It was in 1971, when video games became popular as a commercial entertainment option. Atari was an American company though it had a Japanese name. On the other hand, Sega, a Japanese company was set up by an American. Magnavox owned by Phillips and Nintendo popularized video games. Sony was into the manufacturing of electronic goods like video recorders and transistor radios and when it realized that video games can fetch the company impressive profits, then, it released a video game with the expectation of providing the top selling product to the world.
The history of video games must take into account some of the most hyped arcade video games. These games are usually counted as superb technical innovations. Computer Space, Nutting Associates was the first commercial arcade video game and it was released in 1971. Nolan Bushnell should be credited for its superb designing. Though it involves many technical innovations, but it failed to become a commercial success because the game play was bit confusing. Pong was released in 1972 and it is regarded as the first commercial success and thus, it is surely a major landmark in the history of video games. And, this game was very simple and so, it became quite popular within a short span of time. Some of the popular home video games are Magnavox Odyssey, Atari Pong, Atari 2600, Coleco Colecovision, Atari 5200 Super System and so on.
