Video Games
A video game can be defined as an electronic interactive game. The interaction is carried out with a user interface and the game generates visual feedback on a video device. It is called “video game” because, it makes use of a raster display device. The term, video game is now operating on a broader horizon. And so, now, it includes any type of display device. Video games cannot be played without electronic systems. The electronic systems are known as platforms and they can be either personal computers or video game consoles. The platforms are of various types, raging from large computers to handy ones.
The input devices are used to manipulate various video games and these devices are called game controllers. Apart from the visual feedback provision, video games also involve other systems to improve interaction with the player.
Let us not get into the controversies regarding the origin of the video games. People are still confused about its origin and lots of debates prevail on this issue. We can refer to two major schools of thought, ludology and narratology in order to define video game. According to the narrativists, video game takes the players from the real world to the fictional world. The players lose their own identities and start behaving like the characters of the game. The video games are a wonderful storytelling medium to the narrativists. And, so, it can be said that video games are derivatives of humanities. The players get attracted to video games because these games come as a relief from the harsh realities of today's modern world. The players can be winners in this fictional world and they are always engaged in violent actions to kill the enemies and to move on to the game's next level. These video games can be counted as wish fulfillment agents. But, the ludologists are not ready to consider the video games as the offshoot of arts. According to these ludologists, the players get attracted to the video games because they are interesting games and they only focus on the set of the rules of the games. The video games are nothing more than mere game options to the ludologists. Thus, these theories are complicating the concept of video games more and we are still looking forward to a good and clear definition of video games.
It is known to all that video games are commercial entertainment options but it is interesting to note that video games are also meant to serve other purposes and so, we have so many varied types of video games, advergames, propaganda games and educational games and all of these fall under the category of serious games. The development process of video games is really interesting. The Developers are creative persons and they can be graphic designers or visualizers. Developers can be of three types, in house, independents and third party developers. In house developers are the employees of the publishers whereas, the independents are free developers and third party developers are actually hired by the publishers. Development of the video games is done in special studios.
Video games are indeed getting highly popular as an entertainment option day by day especially among the children. But, the video games are also leading to some serious problems.
